Healthy Eating

To A Healthy New Year!

This is the year to eat healthy and watch your portion sizes.  Try our Savory Cupcakes. They are great for
portion control and come in many varieties, such as lasagna, meatloaf and mash potatoes, mac & cheese.... to name a few.   Add  turkey burgers to your menu instead of hamburgers. Turkey burgers are really quite good.  Try our new Get Fit Sandwich developed to keep added sugar out of the diet. We use Dave's Killer Bread, Columbus chicken breast, avocado and mustard.

We also carry many garden salad to satisfy your hunger.  Wraps are another way to get around eating bread when you really want a sandwich.  Our popular San Francisco Sandwich is great made into a wrap.

In our meat department, we have many cuts of Grass Fed Beef.

Small Business Saturday

Thursday, November 28, 2013
Small Business Saturday is held on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Local business owners are hoping and encouraging consumers to "Shop Small" and support local businesses in their communities during the holidays.  Modesto is full of small businesses that need supporting not just this Saturday but all year long. Surveys show that for every dollar spent in locally owned business, 45 cents is reinvested back locally.  For us we carry many products that are from Modesto, Turlock, Sonora, Ceres.  Its a concept we believe in and wanted to promote when we opened our shop.

So join my extended family of small businesses this Saturday and shop Chopping Block Butcher Shop and Deli (Modesto), Supermoms Frozen Yogurt and More (Ceres) and Fresh Market Grocery (Turlock).

Thanksgiving

Sunday, November 10, 2013
Thanksgiving is coming up pretty quickly.  So lets talk Turkey.  We have decided to bring in two different turkeys.   Fresh Norbest Turkeys and Fresh Diestel Heidi's Hens.  Most of your know the Norbest brand as being a great tasting bird.  We also will carry the local, out of Sonora, Diestel brand turkey.  Heidi's Hens are certified organic turkeys.  Grown without animal-by-products, antibiotics or growth stimulants. The hens are fed on a diet free of GMO's and are range grown.  Heidi's Hens offer you the wholesome, organic alternative that you desire.  Diestel Ranch certified organic turkeys are a broad breasted bird with that fresh taste that comes with the right growing conditions.

We have two types of hams as well.  Niman Ranch Applewood Ham and Beelers Spiral Ham.  Both are really good.

The pies are Gianna's pies.  And they are really tasty, we taste tasted many pies this summer to pick the best for our customers.  We have Pumpkin, Apple and Berry.

And to top Thanksgiving off we made from scratch Cranberry Pecan Apple Stuffing/Dressing.  We have been using it for months in our stuffed pork roll, so we know its good.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving with family and friends.

Halloween Parties

Tuesday, October 22, 2013

Halloween parties are fun to go to and to give. We love them as adults just as much as we loved them as kids. Who doesn't like to dress up in costume and eat good food.  The trick is having fun while hosting the party. As the host, you'll set the mood, like a simple meal before trick or treating with the kids or appetizer and drinks for the adults.

Once you decide the type of party and create the guest list, the next step is the menu.

When planning a meal before heading out for trick or treating, think about how much time you have.  Would a simple pot of chili do the trick? or should you BBQ burgers (hey its California, its BBQ season all the time).  Invite the neighbors over and have a pot luck.  If you really don't feel like cooking, give us a call and we can cook the tri-tip, the rotisserie chicken or the big pan of lasagna. We have many different pasta and potato salads to choose from.

Now for the appetizer and drinks party.  Again make it simple.  Decide on how many to invite and assign each guest an item to bring.  We have the components for party trays.... cheese, meat, crackers. We can make them for you (on your trays if you choose) or you can purchase the cuts and amounts to  create your own trays.  We have specialty cheese and crackers.  We started creating some tasty stuffed mushrooms and bacon wrapped dates . Maybe even some deviled eggs are on the menu!

If you find yourself attending a party and need to bring a dish or appetizer, we've got you covered as well. Our Arams are the best in town and the trays are on sale this week along with the Meat and Cheese Trays.

Come by or give us a call, we can help with any type of party.  Have a safe and spooky Halloween!

Quality Steaks

Monday, October 21, 2013

The steaks you cook are only as good as the steaks you buy. We carry some of the best. Most of our meat is choice,  we carry a prime New York and many cuts of Grass Fed beef as well. Our butcher can season the meat  with a dry rub or liquid marinade, there are many choices.... many of them local companies.   Steaks can be seasoned with Ol' Morgan's, Snyder's Prime Rib Seasoning, BBQ Pepper Medley, Garlic Herb Marinade. ... to name a few.   Or just good old salt and pepper.  Just lay it on the grill, add some vegetables and a salad.... you have a meal.
Tonight I grilled a grass fed flank steak with Stonewall Kitchen Espresso Rub.  And because I love to dip, I used Charlie's Finishing Sauce to dip.  With the leftover flank steak, I will have a steak salad  for dinner tomorrow night.

Whether its New Yorks, T-bones, Rib Eyes or Tri Tips, we have a nice selection to chose from.

Welcome to Modesto's Butcher Shop and Deli

Thursday, May 16, 2013

My siblings and I grew up in the grocery business; we were born into it you could say. We are second generation grocerman. Our dad and his brothers went into the grocery business in 1951 and grew to seven locations in four cities. But as economics and life got in the way, we closed our stores after 61 years. That's a long time to be around. We had to figure out what to do with ourselves. My sister opened up a frozen yogurt shop in Ceres. My brother and I, well, it's in our blood and when we had this idea to open a smaller version of our store we got really excited. With John’s wife, Judy, sharing the vision we decided to go into business. We wanted to focus on a butcher shop and a service deli. We want to expand our knowledge of good cheese and wine/beer. And we want to share it with you.

Let Costco and Winco sell the can green beans.....we want the fun stuff!

An idea is born and we hope to make you just as excited about it as we are

So we hope you come visit us at Chopping Block Butcher Shop and Deli

My Mantra

To share a meal with family and friends who bring laughter and joy into our lives is one of the greatest pleasures of life. We raise a glass to toast the simple, abiding ritual, and to the warmth it brings into our home. Celebrate Joyfully!
